NRG Sells Radio Group in Nebraska’s Tri-Cities (Updated)

Posted on November 25, 2025November 26, 2025 by Jon Ellis

NRG Media is selling its group of radio stations in Nebraska’s Tri-Cities to a company owned by a local couple with a history in broadcasting.

The deal filed with the FCC on Nov. 25 calls for Usher Media LLC, owned by Alan and Joanna Usher of Grand Island, to purchase five stations and one translator from NRG for $3.75 million.

The stations included in the transaction are Classic Rocker KROR/101.5 (Hastings), Country station “Y102” (KRNY/102.3 Kearney), “Hits 106” (KQKY/105.9 Kearney), Classic Hits outlet “107.7 The Island” (KSYZ Grand Island), News/Talker KGFW/1340 (Kearney), and KGFW translator K241CN/96.1 (Kearney).

Alan and Joanna Usher currently own 32% interest in Legacy Communications (Grand Island Family Radio), which owns a competing group of radio stations. Legacy’s majority owner, the Joseph J. Vavricek Irrevocable Trust, will buy the Ushers’ interest in the company for $1.8 million, according to a separate transaction filed with the FCC on Nov. 26.

The first filing also states the Ushers will resign from management positions at Legacy.

The asset purchase agreement includes a provision prohibiting NRG from buying or operating any stations in the market for three years.

Iowa-based NRG also has groups in Lincoln and Omaha. It recently sold one of its Omaha stations to a local owner.
