FCC Monitor: FM Station on the Edge of the BWCA Upgrades

Posted on May 25, 2026May 24, 2026 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent regulatory filings and actions concerning Upper Midwest broadcast stations. This report is created by the author and is not an official report of the FCC.

Iowa

Climate March was granted the callsign KNOS-LP for its future low-power FM station on 107.9 in Des Moines.

K-Love’s KLFG/89.5 (Fort Dodge) notified the FCC that it is operating at an unspecified reduced power due to a damaged transmission line. The reduced-power operation began May 15. KLFG normally uses 34kW/257m (class C1).

Minnesota

Civic Media’s WELY-FM/94.5 (Ely) has completed an upgrade to 35kW/100m (class C2). It had previously been licensed for 6kW/100m (class A) but was temporarily using 450 Watts while the new equipment was installed. The upgrade extends WELY-FM’s coverage area to include more of the eastern Iron Range and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Meanwhile, Civic’s K280AT/103.9 (Ely) has applied to switch from its current 117-Watt directional facility to 250 Watts non-directional. It will continue to relay WELY/1450.

Note: WELY Chief Engineer Erick Burnstad discussed the work at the station on the most recent episode of the This Week in Radio Tech podcast.

K-Love Inc.’s W225AP/92.9 (St. Paul) is operating at unspecified reduced power due to antenna damage caused by a windstorm. The reduced-power operation began May 11. W225AP carries “Boost” from KMWA-HD2, normally transmitting with 250 Watts from the Wells Fargo Center in Minneapolis.

Northern Community Radio’s K210DR/89.9 (Brainerd) reports it has been operating at an unspecified reduced power since May 11 due to a transmitter power amplifier issue. K210DR normally transmits with 115 Watts and relays KAXE/91.7 (Grand Rapids).

Nebraska

Milachi Media LLC applied for new low-power TV stations on channels 12 and 26 in North Platte. Channel 12 would use 220 Watts while channel 26 would use 1kW.

North Dakota

CSN International’s K201FJ/88.1 (Williston) returned to the air on May 22.

Wisconsin

BFAM LLC applied for a low-power TV station on channel 12 in Milwaukee using 3kW. (It would need to use a different virtual channel due to WISN-TV/12.1, which transmits on RF channel 28.)

The FCC granted David Magnum’s W276CO/103.1 (Fond du Lac) an upgrade from 120 to 250 Watts.
