Five national Edward R. Murrow Awards have been presented to Upper Midwest news organizations:
- Tegna NBC affiliate KARE/11 (Minneapolis) won in the Excellence in Video category for “Leave the Light On.”
- Gray NBC affiliate WMTV/15 (Madison) won in the Breaking News category for its coverage of the Abundant Life Christian School shooting and in the Digital category for coverage of a kayaker who allegedly faked his own death. (Disclosure: Your reporter worked with WMTV during ongoing coverage of those stories but was not directly involved in the entries.)
- Eric Hanson of Hearst CBS affiliate KCCI/8 (Des Moines) won for Excellence in Writing.
- The University of Nebraska’s KRNU/90.3 (Lincoln) won in the Excellence in Podcast category for 93 Counties – Nance County Genoa Indian Industrial School.
Anchor/reporter Jannay Towne is departing Nexstar NBC affiliate WHO-TV/13 (Des Moines) for a job in another field.
Allen Media ABC affiliate WXOW/19 (La Crosse) announced that Heather Armstrong is departing after 15 years with the station.
The Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, and Minnesota Public Radio report that meteorologist Wren Clair has filed a lawsuit against Hubbard’s KSTP-TV/5 (St. Paul) alleging sexual discrimination and harassment. The station says Clair was fired for poor performance.
The Rick and April morning show on WSPT/97.9 (Stevens Point-Wausau) has ended, with Mark Vicker taking over the morning shift.
